Yvan Dagenais
It's hard to talk about art in North Hatley without mentioning Yvan Dagenais. Settled in the village for decades, this pastel and oil painter has left his mark on both the artistic and physical landscape: he's the one, together with the Vision 2000 team, who designed the village's famous footbridge, which over the years has become the true emblem of North Hatley.
In 1992, Yvan Dagenais opened his own gallery on Main Street in North Hatley, later adding a gift shop. For nearly fifteen years, until the business closed in the spring of 2006, this address became a landmark for both residents and visitors passing through, who came to discover his work right in the heart of the village where he had settled.
That same year, in 1992, he designed, together with the Vision 2000 team, the footbridge that spans the river and today adorns postcards, logos, and souvenirs of North Hatley — a lasting contribution that goes far beyond painting. Around this same period, he received a grant from Quebec's Ministry of Culture for a series of paintings on the theme of swimming.
Since then, Yvan Dagenais has continued to live and create in the region, where he remains a respected and recognized figure among both local artists and the community.
Trained in pastels and oils, Yvan Dagenais has been exhibiting since the early 1980s and has received numerous awards. He is among the first Canadian artists to become a member of the Pastel Society of America (PSA) and to exhibit in New York at the National Gramercy Park Gallery, as well as at the Biennale du Grand Palais in Paris.
Quickly sought after for demonstrations, portrait workshops, and various events, he has also built a notable career as an illustrator: he signed the cover art for Maîtres magazine for over three years, collaborated with several magazines and with the newspaper La Presse, and drew famous trials for TVA. This expertise in courtroom sketching even earned him a role as a courtroom sketch artist in the film Les tisserands du pouvoir (1988).
His technical skill also led him to Pébéo, for whom he serves as an advisor and trainer in Canada and the United States.
Holder of a Master's degree in Fine Arts from UQAM, Yvan Dagenais taught visual art as a lecturer at the Université de Sherbrooke from 1983 to 2019, in addition to teaching occasionally at UTA and for Vacances Art-Nature. As part of doctoral studies, he spent over eleven years exploring how drawing is learned among graduating medical students. He also served for over twenty years on the board of directors of the Musée des beaux-arts de Sherbrooke.

Treat yourself, or someone you love, to a unique portrait sketched and signed by one of our local artists. Yvan Dagenais, a talented portrait artist, invites you to experience a memorable artistic session. In a one-hour sitting, he captures the essence of a person, their features, character, and light, in a pastel sketch done entirely by hand.
Prefer an in-person session? Yvan will work in front of you, pastel in hand, in his North Hatley studio or outdoors. Have a favorite photo that's close to your heart? It can also be used as a reference for the artwork.
At the end of the session, you'll leave with an original, signed piece, ready to be framed. The perfect gift for a birthday, or simply a treat for yourself.
